General Signs that Your Child is Behind in their Development and Needs to See a Speech Pathologist

  • They didn't start using single words between 18 months and 2 years of age

  • They didn't start combing words between 2 and 2.5 years of age

  • They are 2 years and older and you as their parent understand less then half of what is said (often as a parent you may find yourself saying 'uhuh', 'wow' and 'really' not knowing what it is they are really saying until they point to something or use other cues in the environment to help you understand).

  • They seem not to understand what to do when you ask them to complete a simple task e.g. 'Go and get your shoes'

  • Significant behavioural issues

  • They haven't started to engage in imaginative play and they are 3 years old or more

  • Difficulty making friends or playing with friends of the same age

  • Poor eye contact

  • Doesn't engage with books

  • Struggling to advance in their reading and writing skills at the level expected for their age

  • They have been stuttering for 6 months or more

  • They are drooling

  • You have to ask them to stop mumbling

  • They are a very fussy eater
